What to Do When You Wake Up on the Wrong Side of the Bed

What do you do when you wake up on the wrong side of the bed? We all have these days, where not just one thing goes wrong but does it ever seem like everything goes wrong?

Personally, on days like this, I really start wondering, "Why is this happening to ME?!", as if it doesn't happen to anybody else. But I have a feeling we can all relate to this.

Maybe you start off on the wrong foot, you just wake up annoyed, later than you wanted to, you stub your toe and run out of hot water, couldn't find the keys. Believe me, I get it, and I believe we can all relate to this kind of morning, we all have them.

I've even noticed my two sweet, little angels have them. My kids can just wake up feeling cranky and not nice. They're just four and two years old, and for the most part, they are so sweet. It's something that we are all susceptible to, and we don't want it to ruin our days. I mean, it really could even ruin our entire week.

It's wonderful to know if at any moment in your day, whether it's the way you're starting your morning, or it's something that happens mid-day, what can you do to press reset in the moment and not let it steal your entire day.

I want you to stay in motivation, I want you to stay committed to what you really want and I believe we really don't want to feel like victims, that the universe or the whole world is against us. I am going to give you things to do when you wake up on the wrong side of the bed.

Now obviously we need to start the day over, we just do. But is it realistic to actually be able to do this? It IS, so here's how you do it...

Stop, just stop. Stop what you are doing in that moment, that's the first step. If you just continue on in that big motion of stubbing toes, and anger, and feeling like the world is against you, and losing things, you're going off in a direction it will take a miracle to change but it can seriously shift with your action of just stopping. Take a big, deep breath and let it out. Take a couple more and just start breathing normal again.

The first step in any big change was iconicized in 12-Step programs, admit that you're having a problem, it's a blueprint for just having a bad day. It's okay, so just say it. Sometimes we think we need to power through, and it's not always the solution, sometimes it might be. But here, it's easy enough, and the best strategy, to just accept the crappy morning, or the crappy moments that you're having and then move on to some small actions, to micro-actions, to turn it around.

One very easy step is to think of things you're grateful for. If it's that you had a warm bed to sleep in, or you have a home, real basic stuff if you have to, but I know you have more. In a mood, if you're like me, I know what this mood is, it might be harder to think of the things you're grateful for but you have a lot to focus on that you can be thankful for. And it will help truly begin to shift, not just your perspective, but the way that you energetically feel and the way that you are experiencing the world and the way that the world is experiencing you.

I personally like to write things down. So if you're trying to get out the door and it's not realistic to stop and start writing a gratitude list, just start listing a couple things in your head and turn your attention to the positive aspects of your life, things you can be grateful for. And the next step in all of this, we're starting to make some really basic changes here by just stopping, taking a few deep breaths, using our mind to connect with things that we're grateful for, and now moving forward, keep it simple. Not only when you're actively starting your day over in these few moments, but consider this rule of thumb for the rest of the day. Take it easy and don't take on more than you already have on your schedule.

Saying no is a powerful tip. I discussed this with Colleen Hauk a few weeks ago on our show, go back and listen to that interview if you're doing too much and feeling overwhelmed. I know for me, when I start to have really bad days it's actually because I'm doing way too much and it's not serving me, and I probably need to take a look at that.

The last tip, if you wake up on the wrong side of the bed but you're ready to commit to an extraordinary life, the best step is to love yourself, love yourself up and down. Give yourself a big hug, go get a massage or a pedicure, listen to an empowering podcast like this one. Take some steps to care for yourself, make a cup of tea, take a bath, call someone who inspires you, watch something that makes you laugh. Take a small step toward a goal you have, do some writing, figure out what feels good to you today. And let me know in the comments what you do for self-care, especially when you're having a bad day.
